As you are holding the snake, look for uplifted scales, ticks, or small blisters (Blister Disease). Look at the top of his head–closely– a white powder is a sign of Snake Mites. These are the easiest signs to spot regarding an unhealthy snake.
- Once you have determined that the snake has no visible signs as stated above, we can check further. Is the snake Breathing with it’s mouth open? Does it have “Bubbles” or a clear fluid coming from it nostrils? If so, you do not want it, this is a sign of Respiratory Disease.
Carefully open the snakes mouth, does it have white Gums, a white interior of the mouth, or a white “Cottage Chese” material in the mouth? If so, this snake has Mouth Rot, and you do not want it.

- 1. Decide the house is not your “home” anymore. Have you ever walked into a model home for sale and thought “Wow, this is a beautiful house, I can see myself having breakfast in this nook, or sleeping in this bedroom, or sitting on this porch”? Stage your home so potential buyers will see themselves living in your house. They will not be attracted by how you live in your “home”. Take a moment to consider your clutter, family photos, taste specific décor, pets, children, laundry, dishes, trash, mail, and odors…they are all a fact of “home” but they can squash a good sales opportunity. As you move to the next objective, think “model home”.
- 2. Declutter. Walk through each room with a box and packing material and pack it all up. Clear off every dresser, nightstand, unload every laundry basket, pack up magazines, books, and excess clothing. Pack up décor and family pictures. As a general rule do not have more than three items on any one table or shelf at a time. Clear off kitchen counters, pack away recipe books, and file mail, pack art and collectibles. Clear out bathrooms, vanities, toilet areas, keep only the essentials stowed away neatly and out of sight.
- 3. Pair Down Furniture. You are selling square footage in your house so give the buyers as much visual square footage as possible so they see what they are getting for their dollar. Clear out excess tables and chairs, buffets, curios, wine cabinets, magazine racks, and book shelves that take up floor and wall space. Walk through your house and determine what furniture pieces are eating up expensive square footage on the floors and up against the walls and take these pieces to storage while the house is on the market.
- 4. Clean Out Storage. Your potential buyers need growing room, and they will stop short on your growing pains, therefore, clean out overstuffed closets and storage areas. Take this opportunity to donate items to charity. Sort through your kitchen pantry and donate to the local food bank. If you have time, have a tag sale and use the proceeds for staging the rest of your house. If you don’t have time for a tag sale, make donations to tax deductible charities. As a general rule, each closet and storage area, and garage should look like the buyers could add their own clothing, shoes, and boxes.
- 5. Purpose Rooms. Is one of your bedrooms serving as a home office? Is your dining room serving as a playroom? If so, consider bringing back the purpose of that room. Your buyer may not use the dining room as a playroom, but may be a consummate entertainer and can’t see past all the toys. If one of your bedrooms is an office, consider adding a bed to the room. Bedrooms bring more bang for the buck than offices do, so you want to make sure you are getting the most for your property by featuring all the bedrooms that are listed for sale. If you don’t have the money for a bed in the room, get an elevated blow up mattress and make it up with new linens and pillows to get the look you need.
- 6. Clean, Clean, Clean! Now that you have decluttered, paired down furniture, cleaned out storage areas and purposed your rooms, you’ve uncovered and created a ton of dirt and dust. Now is time to make your house shine! Every bathroom should be scrubbed from top to bottom. In the kitchen, clean out every appliance, countertop, clean/polish cabinetry. The floor and baseboards in every room should shine like new, as well as windows and window coverings. Wipe down dust and cob webs from every light fixture, corner, molding, and door. Clean carpets and deodorize them, replace them if they can’t be cleaned. Clean up pet areas and smells. Strategically hide deodorizers. Clean bedroom linens and replace if worn out, every bed and bath should be fresh and inviting.
- 7. Dumb Down Décor and De-date. If you’ve got purple carpet or red walls or anything outside of “neutral”, you need to seriously consider dumbing down your décor for your potential buyers. Your potential buyers may not be able to see themselves in anything other than “Neutral” so do what it takes to appeal to them, not yourself. Try slip covers for furniture, paint in light neutral tones, neutral to light colored linens and towels help neutralize décor. Wallpaper tends to be a real deal breaker for buyers and seriously dates a home, so remove it and paint a nice neutral shade. Consider replacing or painting anything that dates the house to a certain decade.
- 8. Maintenance. Fix anything that is broken in the home. If potential buyers see anything that needs fixing or replacing, their mind goes directly to big ticket expenses and replacements and you’ve lost the offer or you might receive a “low ball” offer. Replace light bulbs or fixtures if they are broken, patch walls, touch up paint on walls and trim, fix door knobs, sticky locks, fix cabinetry, and floors. Rectify peeling paint anywhere in the house, fix railings, windows and doors. We are still going for the “brand new model home” look.
- 9. Curb Appeal. Now that the inside of the house is show ready, make sure the outside of your house is just as appealing. If you don’t know where to start outside, drive around your neighborhood and take notes on the best looking house on the block, what do you see? What shrubs/flowers do they have planted in the yard? Is the house freshly painted? Is the concrete clean? Is the front door clean and in good repair? Can you see the numbers on the house and/or the mailbox? Bring your notes home and implement them in your own yard for great impact so you get a “showing” you deserve and not just a “drive by”.
- 10. Be Show Ready. Spend 15 minutes a day enlisting the entire family to clean up after themselves, put toys and clothing away and file mail, and take out the trash and do the dishes, have them scoop pet messes. Spend an hour each week enlisting the entire family to running the vacuum, cleaning bathrooms, kitchen, and dusting. If you don’t have time for this consider hiring a weekly maid service while your house is on the market.

- On a special note, the day of the showings, bake brownies or “pop in the oven” cookies and set out on a plate. Set the dining room for a dinner party, put out fresh flowers, open a magazine and lay out a throw in a cozy spot, open the curtains/blinds and let the light in, and stow away pets in a crate/garage, or take pets with you. Stage your home like a “model home for sale” and you’ll have a top dollar offer before you know it!
