Review of ePublishing for Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

March 9th, 2010 No comments

ePublishing for Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))The inevitability of more publications being distributed via eBook format is pretty well conceded by any expert familiar with the dollar and time benefits of ePublishing. How soon we start seeing titles in eBook format, which subjects they cover, and which format version becomes the accepted standard depends on how easily the issues are understood and the techniques for creating eBooks explained.
“ePublishing for Dummies” makes a major contribution in that advancement. The more publishers, technical writers, and budding authors read and apply the topics covered by this book, the sooner ePublishing will take off. ePublishing does not spell the end of paper books… it simply offers another delivery medium for published content – superior for many readers. Thank you Victoria for making writing and ePublishing approachable.
ePublishing is not for the faint at heart, it is still “early adopters” territory. But this book does provide credibility, easy-to-use instructions, information, and insight – and that’s a start!

Review of eBay for Dummies, Fourth Edition (Paperback)

eBay for Dummies, Fourth EditionThis review refers to “ebay For Dummies” (4th Edition) by Marsha Collier….

I did alot of “window” shopping over at eBay, but never actually got up the nerve to bid, buy or sell over there. I felt real safe here at Amazon. I saw so many items over there that I was interested in(you name it..they got it!), but was just afraid of jumping in. Was it safe? Would I wind up with something I really didn’t want? How do you know when and what to bid? If your selling, how do you go about that? etc. etc…

This book answered ALL those questions and much, much more. Even this book itself was intimidating to me when it first arrived. There was sooo much ’stuff’ in it. Did I have to know ALL that before i could hang out at eBay? So I just started glancing through it and realized what a treasure chest of info it was. Pretty soon I was reading it chapter by chapter just because I found it all so interesting.

“eBay for Dummies” covers it all. From the very basics…getting a feel for eBay, how to sign up,getting the “lay of the land”, getting info on the seller, and bidding, to putting items up for sale, completeing cyber paperwork, shipping and dealing with buyers and sellers. There are chapters on rules and a safety program, bidding stategies, and there’s even one on how to present the best pictures of your items if you are selling.

Yes..I was afraid..I was very afraid..but there’s no better feeling than going into something armed with knowledge, even if you are a newbie! And you don’t need to read it cover to cover to get started. It’s easy to look up and find answers to questions you have to get started, and it’ll always be there as a refrence as you go along and become more comfortable. You’ll be a biddin’ and a buyin’(and maybe even a sellin’)in no time at all. Be careful though..you may get hooked!

Thanks Marsha Collier for this great fountain of new age shopping information for beginners. I’m not afraid anymore!

Go For It…Laurie

Review of Search Engine Optimization For Dummies, Second Edition (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) (Paperback)

February 22nd, 2010 No comments

Search Engine Optimization For Dummies, Second Edition (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))I suppose with an average of 5-Stars my review ranking makes me the curmudgeon since I offer only 3-Stars. Dummies books many times become complicated because they flounder around instead of getting straight to the subject matter, this book is no exception. While offering a plethora of important and valuable information the writings start, stop and go back and forth too often. I was armed with a highlighter and notepad but found myself constantly referencing back and forth, forced to re-read passages to collect all the data important to optimize according to the authors recommendations.

An example is discussing topics, which engage the readers interest only to suddenly stop with, “More on this subject in Chapter X.” Ok, so I put my highlighter down until later. This becomes frustrating. Discuss highlights in the book with an introduction and get to the point in one place, not later in several places. The checklist offered on the inside cover is a nice highlight and covering the topics once again in an introduction should be enough and will lead to less confusion.

As with all tech books, without any fault to the author, the subject matter becomes dated quickly. This is the case with SEO for Dummies but the basics offered are valuable as a starting point in optimizing your web site. Although keywords, content and reciprocal linking are stressed heavily, my own inadvertent experiment has shown content to actually be at least as valuable if not more important than incoming links for high-ranking sites. As an example, I have two web-blogs with Google rankings of 2 and 3 respectively which have virtually no incoming links only a lot of content. In these cases content proves extremely valuable. These blogs are relatively young.

The author makes an attempt to explain Googles algorithm but fails miserably to make a point, and serves no purpose in advancing SEO knowledge and very little is mentioned about the Google “Sandbox” which is the initial purgatory new sites are sent to while Google decides a web sites worthiness. Understanding the sandbox in extremely important so the Webmaster pro or amateur realizes page ranking comes with sweat equity and patience.

My largest disappointment came when visiting the authors web site which was not up to date and had several “dead links.” At this writing his Google site ranking is 5/10, which is very good but one must practice what they preach and these instances were glaring errors. Another problem is the author spends time discounting the use of “Frames/Frameset” but his site uses frames as viewed in the source code. If they should be avoided why does his site contain them?

I recommend this book if purchased with a deep discount. Next thoroughly read and digest the research information at www.marketingexperiments.com and incorporate all your information and experience into a business plan using their template. In combination with SEO for Dummies your site will be enhanced for SEO and you’ll have a deeper understanding of Google and other methods of SEO to increase site traffic as well as page ranking.

Product Description
You have a cool Web site, and a really great product, service, or cause you want people to know about. But visitors aren’t beating down your cyber-door. What happened? The answer, most likely, is that you haven’t made your site irresistible to search engines.

Search engines have a great deal of control over the volume of traffic a Web site gets, because they put your site in front of people searching for your product or service. If you know the secrets of wooing the search engines, you can

  • Gain greater visibility for your site
  • Advance your position in the rankings
  • Avoid techniques that cause search engines to bump your site to the end of the list

In addition to the familiar ones like Google and Yahoo!, there are dozens of other search engines out there. Search Engine Optimization For Dummies, 2nd Edition shows you how to create a site that will pop to the top like a cork whenever people search for related products or services. It will help you

  • Become familiar with search engines and search directories and find out which keywords work
  • Build your site with techniques that search engines like and avoid the ones they don’t
  • Register your site with the top search systems and get it listed in directories

There’s even a companion Web site with all the links in the book neatly (and conveniently) arranged so you don’t have to type them, plus a bonus chapter to help you power up your skills. Review of Macromedia Flash MX for Dummies (Paperback)

February 15th, 2010 No comments

Macromedia Flash MX for DummiesWhen Flash MX was released, I wanted to get myself up to speed as quickly as possible on how to use all the new features of this new version of Flash. The first book I bought-and the one I still refer to the most often-is Gurdy Leete and Ellen Finkelstein’s “Flash MX for Dummies.”

Flash is said to have a steep learning curve, and the pursuit of learning a little Flash to liven up one’s website has been known to cause more than one otherwise sane and intelligent individual to pull out her hair in fits of frustration and despair. When I was first learning Flash, I purchased and studied a wide variety of thick (and expensive) tombs on the subject, and yet, in spite of hours of agonizing over code and techniques that I never could get to actually work, I finally discovered the clear writing of Gurdy Leete and Ellen Finkelstein. Within a week after purchasing and reading my first “Flash for Dummies” book, I created my very first movie in Flash, and I was thrilled with the end result.

“Flash MX for Dummies” contains just the right amount of clear, concise information, along with step-by-step instructions that will walk you through the creation of your first Flash movie. As you read through the book, you will feel that you have a pair of friendly and competent mentors at your side. The authors have a way of making even the most difficult concepts accessible. Their tone is warm and friendly, yet never condescending.

In addition to providing thorough coverage of the basics of learning Flash, the book also introduces a number of intermediate concepts such as using masks, importing sound and video into your Flash movie, and making use of templates. The chapter named “Getting Interactive” provides the reader with clear and easy instructions for accomplishing such advanced tasks as using the SetMask method to make a movie clip into a mask and dynamically loading music from the web. I also appreciated the section entitled, “Frequently Asked Questions” which provided crystal clear, step-by-step instructions for doing some fun things like creating a custom cursor and making “drag-and-drop” objects.

If all of this isn’t enough, the book also comes with an accompanying CD that is packed with resources, including a library of vector graphics you can use in your movies, Flash movies that you can open in Flash and dissect in order to further your understanding of Flash, and even a whole library of sounds you can practice with, courtesy of SoundRangers.

Not only does this book provide you with top-notch instruction for learning Flash, but you won’t have to pay an arm and a leg for it. The price of the book is less than half the price of many other books on the same subject.

The book is perfect for those just starting out in learning Flash. At the same time, it provides more experienced Flashers with a wealth of information, resources, and new ideas.I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in furthering herunderstanding of Flash. Buy the book. Then you, too, can be one happy dummy. : )
